Open House Chicago 2018

Open House Chicago is the architectural weekend (October 13 and 14 this year) when some of Chicago’s most interesting private buildings open their doors to the public.

Chicago is world-renowned for its architecture, and for one weekend a year we get the opportunity to take a peek into hundreds of buildings that are otherwise inaccessible to people who “just want to see the inside.”

Here’s a list of some of the buildings that are close to our four locations:

Bridgeport

Ling Shen Ching Tze Buddhist Temple  (Photo above by Eric Allix Rogers via Open House Chicago)

1035 West 31st Street (just steps from our original coffeehouse at 31st & Morgan)

A triangular brick church built in 2894, originally Presbyterian, and now perhaps the only Buddhist temple in Chicago that was designed by Daniel Burnham and his partner John Root.

St. Mary of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church

1039 West 32nd Street (one block from 31st & Morgan)

Founded in 1882 to serve the Polish families of Bridgeport, the church has a Romanesque exterior and a Byzantine interior resembling a Greek Cross, with half domes and arches surrounding a 113-foot-high central dome, recently restored.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park Bank & Trust

1525 E. 53rd St. (two blocks from our coffeehouse in the Hyde Park Art Center)

The largest bank building outside of Chicago’s Loop when it was completed in 1929, the grand second-floor banking hall is one of the most impressive in the city.

See also the many additional sites in Hyde Park.

South Loop

There are a number of excellent buildings worth seeing (such as Glessner House) about a mile southeast of our location in Roosevelt Collection.

The Loop

There are dozens of impressive sites in the Loop, most of which are a short walk from our location at 73 East Jackson Boulevard.

So grab a coffee to go from any of our locations and talk a walk to see some amazing architecture.

Here’s information about last year’s Open House — but note that many of the buildings have changed and may not be accessible this year.
